There are currently four incineration plants operating in Yokohama. They incinerate, both safely and efficiently, the entire quantity of combustible waste collected from within the city.
The city operates these plants continuously on a long-term, stable basis. We strive to properly manage the combustion, by having them incinerate waste at high temperatures (in the range of 800 – 950 degrees C) to curtail the derivation of dioxin, for example.
In addition, the plant facilities reflect full consideration for environmental preservation so that they do not exert an adverse impact on the surrounding environment. More specifically, the plants are installed with high-performance exhaust gas treatment equipment for removal of hazardous substances such as hydrogen chloride, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, dust/soot, and dioxin. They also contain wastewater treatment facilities for purification of the plant wastewater.

Owing to the city’s harsh financial situation, it has not been able to fully address the deterioration of facilities. There have been instances of equipment failure and trouble leading to the suspension of operation. In light of such incidents as well, the city must establish a clear order of repair priority and perform repairs systematically.
