A picture book focused on fire prevention-related story written by Yokohama Fire Bureau firefighter is produced through a joint project with a private sector to widely raise children’s awareness in terms of fire/disaster prevention by reading them again and again at nursery schools as well as DRRM guidance for kids.

Enhancing fire/disaster prevention education for preschool children, who will be the future leaders of local DRRM

C. Activities

  • In the process of production of this picture book, an internal project was set up to supervise the contents across departments with thorough discussions, and were made easy to understand for children.
  • In addition to unique approach as co-creation project with private sector and significant reduction of its cost and labour burden for staff members, the project also resulted in a great impact on publicity effect by selling the book nationwide level.
  • Planning and supervising by YFB as the direct authority on this field, the picture book included the causes of house fires, precautions to be taken, and the importance of mutual-help in the story as well as appendices, thereby motivating parents and children to learn regarding fire/disaster prevention.

  • It is mainly targeted at elementary school students and above as for general fire/disaster prevention education, and there has been a need for approach to provide knowledge and its educational tools for preschool children.
  • For the purposes of enhancing DRR education among children, there has also been a need for creating new characters that children would be interested in

E. Outcomes and Impacts:

  • By distributing the picture books in nursery schools, kindergartens, libraries, etc., many people can learn and continue to have an educational effect on children in the future.
  •  The book received favourable receptions among nursery school children, etc. when YFB implemented live-reading performance which is one of the training programs at fire station as DRR enhancement. And, the original story was also performed live-reading at the regular performance as one of the YFB fireman`s band activities, which left a deep impression to the children.
    These efforts were highly evaluated as a new attempt by YFB in a questionnaire survey results submitted by these DRR events visitors, and also received a variety range of praises from them. It is also identified that some of them strongly hope that people should listen to the book in order to contribute to DRRM.
