CITYNET Platform for Disaster Resiliency (CPDR)

  1. Background

Through CITYNET’s Disaster Cluster group, the CITYNET Yokohama Office (CYO), partnering with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, Colombo Municipal Council, City Government of Makati, the Earthquakes and Megacities Initiative, Makati City, Bangkok,Colombo, and Yokohama, developed the CITYNET Platform for Disaster Resiliency (CPDR), an online Disaster Risk Reduction and Management training course. The online course development preparatory meeting was held in Yokohama, Japan from August 31 – September 6 2013.

Prior to course content development, consultations were done to identify the needs of participants. The online course was completed by participating members over the course of six weeks, and afterwards, course participants completed a survey to gauge its effectiveness. 75% of the participants rated the lessons as highly satisfactory and 78% reported that the course was highly relevant to their needs.

The course platform provides a place where members can engage in discussion forums and share material among professionals from other member cities in addition to being able to take the necessary courses to further develop the capacity of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) personnel. In the long run, the platform is expected to act as a database of various practices and initiatives related to DRR.

  1. Project Goal

The goal of the CPDR project is to scale up the knowledge and skills of CITYNET members on disaster preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery. The online course is an opportunity to share and enhance knowledge between cities and improve city-to-city exchanges through discussion of best practices and experiences in DRR.
