Student Based Sustainable and Proactive Environmental Education
Location: Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Colombo is Sri Lanka’s largest city, with a population of over 4.6 million. It is also the administrative capital of Sri Lanka’s Western Province. In such a metropolitan area, students rarely have the chance to interact with and learn about the natural environment. Collaborating with Open Yokohama, HELP-O, and Sevanatha, CITYNET Yokohama’s Student Based Sustainable and Proactive Environmental Education Project provides school children with opportunities to learn practical skills for studying and engaging with their surroundings. The program offers hands-on workshops and activities involving species identification, field observation, wildlife gardening, weather measurement, presentations, reflection through art and writing, and an environmental school club to encourage sustainability leadership.
2. Project Goal
The objective of the Student Based Sustainable and Proactive Environmental Education project is to empower students to learn about their natural surroundings and develop an appreciation for biodiversity and sustainability. Through its workshops and organized activities the program also encourages participants to develop their creativity, leadership, public-speaking, and other important life skills.
